How does Invisalign work ?

Invisalign transforms your smile using a series of custom designed aligners. You will need to wear each aligner for 1–2 weeks before moving onto the next set of aligners in the sequence. Throughout the treatment, we will keep a close eye on your progress, making small adjustments to deliver an incredible result.

Remove your aligners to eat, drink and brush

You will need to wear your aligners for between 20 and 22 hours every day. You can take them out to eat, drink, brush and floss your teeth. This means you can enjoy all your favourite foods throughout your treatment – and keep your teeth clean and healthy for an exceptional outcome.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

What is Invisalign ?

Invisalign is a form of removable clear aligner treatment and was the first company to bring clear aligners to the market back in 1998. Often referred to as ‘clear braces’, these aligners provide an alternative to fixed brace orthodontics and are ideal for adults and teens who don’t want to be seen wearing traditional metal braces. Although several other companies are offering ‘aligner style’ treatments, Invisalign have treated more cases having already improved the smiles of over 14 million people worldwide.

Does Invisalign treatment hurt?

In a short word, no! You may feel some slight tension or pressure initially  – this is when the majority of the tooth movement is done - but this is natural and is a sign that your Invisalign treatment is working. After this, you should be able to continue as normal. Also, and unlike metal braces, there are no brackets and wiring to catch on the inside of the mouth or tongue, so after a few days, you probably won’t even realise that you are wearing them !

Are Invisalign Aligners comfortable ?

Invisalign has been designed with comfort in mind using ‘transparent polycrystalline alumina’ – a clear, smooth material that incidentally was designed by NASA. It also has the benefit of no metal wires or brackets, which can sometimes cause discomfort at the beginning of treatment.

How long do I need to wear my aligners everyday ?

You will need to wear your aligners for around 20 to 22 hours a day, but you can take them out for eating, drinking, brushing and any sports activities.

Will wearing aligners affect my speech ?

You will quickly get used to your aligners and should be talking clearly and confidently.

What is the average duration of the treatment ?

Normal treatment duration is 6-12 months, although it could be longer in cases of severe mal-alignments. It also depends on regular usage and compliance by the patient.

How long should I wear each set of aligners ?

Each set should be worn for 2 week’s time as they are programmed to move your teeth with the right amount of force. We will then give you another set of aligners.

Why can't I just use at-home / DIY aligners ?

This will be very dangerous and we strongly recommend against doing such a thing.

  • Teeth movement is complex biomechanics & only specialist orthodontists are trained to carry out such treatments, not even general dentists
  • Any undue force applied may lead to bone loss and eventual loss of teeth
  • Snug fit of each of your aligners onto your gumline needs to be checked by an orthodontist at regular intervals
  • Even small amounts of dirt/deposits between your teeth might lead to loss of the desired tooth movement.
